It pays to know people!  You may not be connected to the wealthy and powerful, but you don’t need to be.  Tapping the potential of your community of friends can save you big bucks.

We woke up on Wednesday to find that we had no heat.  I’ll spare you the details, but we have to replace our entire HVAC unit.  I put the word out to friends that we needed reliable HVAC companies and boy did they come through.  In the end, we were able to save $550 over the first estimate and $1200 from the highest estimate.  On top of that, we feel confident in the company we’ve chosen because they come highly recommended.

On another note, I am reminded why we choose to live the way do.  Of course we didn’t want to have to spend this chunk from our emergency fund right now.  But, we had it when we needed it.  Credit?  No thank you.  In fact, one company charged a 3% fee for using credit cards, which would have added $135 onto the bill, plus financing charges.

In the end, I’m thankful.  I’m thankful for good friends.  I’m thankful that we had what we needed, when we needed it.  And I’m thankful that we should stay warm for awhile.
